Engine functionality
Gradual upgrades on the engine have helped improve its performance. However, some things have never changed, and one of them is the motor. The displacement index was upped to 1188cc while the entire engine benefitted from a spark-advance unit that is operated digitally. The new fuel pump is more efficient. The same case applies to vacuum carburetors, which ensure that the only one lean, less nasty jet is released.
When the engine is running on a threshold lower than 3000rpm, there are no water jackets available to absorb the resulting noise. At this speed, vibration is also high. The noise can be a bother especially if you are not planning to maintain a low speed for a long time.
Once you hit the 60mph mark, wind easily takes up all engine noise. At this level, one can easily maintain a stable rate of acceleration. When it is operated at speeds that are typical of everyday use, this FJ attains optimal performance. On average, the engine is able to perform better before it reaches the 3500rpm mark.
This engine performance standard is much higher than what many motorbikes of similar capacity can offer. It could be for this reason that the Yamaha FJ 1200 continues to fight and win, and survive many battles.
